New Sanskrit Class

New Course on "Working Knowledge" of Sanskrit for Study of Vedanta

Working knowledge means that the students will be able to read and accurately pronounce Sanskrit sentences written in Devanagari script, be able to break apart complex words into understandable segments, understand most of the words used in Vedanta, understand how nouns and adjectives are derived from roots, be able to read the major Upanisads and the Bhagavad Gita and enjoy Subhashitas. What it will not aim for (although one can continue to study further if one wishes) is to become scholars in Panini grammar, or be able to read understand complex Sanskrit such as Bhagavatam or Kalidasa’s works. We envision this as a multi-year course, part following a particular text (Antoine Book 1 and Book 2), and part as a workshop. As a workshop we hope to provide help with on-line references, supplementary reading and practice exercises. It will be divided into multiple segments, starting from the very basic and then more advanced in later stages. Students can elect to skip the earlier segments that they feel proficient in. Each segment will have a test, to enable students to gauge their own proficiency.
